Love is the strength and weakness of a human being
(January 27th, 2025)
My mother always told me that love comes in three variations. There's the love you feel for your family members. How they care for you. How they’ve raised you. Like when Kawika makes me walk on the inside of the sidewalk. Or when teets does my hair for school picture day. Sometimes it's difficult to understand but in the end, even if you don't realize it. It’s all out of love. Family will always hold the kind of warm love you know you'll have beside you forever.
Then there's the platonic kind. That's primarily built from your friends. Like the way my stomach hurts after laughing with Teyah for too long. The ability to trust someone so much that when you see them suddenly your life spills out in words. That rush of feeling at home even when you’re in public. Seasons change, people change, and life will always change. Though the love between two true friends will never. Friendship is the blossoming love that stays and leaves with time.
Finally there's romance. To which mom says is the black sheep of the three. It comes with the biggest burden. “You’re putting all of the love you’ve been raised and surrounded with into one person.” She explained. The complexity of sharing your deepest thoughts, emotions, and experiences with someone new, in hopes those burdens don't scare them away. You must accommodate their needs in addition to accommodating yours. Romantic love is a feeling that comes with rollercoasters of different emotions. There's happiness that also ties into comfort. The rush of having a partner, or the butterflies after they compliment you. Not having to ask for flowers or your favorite snack because they already know. No one could understand the joy and tranquility that the air holds when it's just you two. It’s a warmth that lives inside of you, to have someone understand you so deeply.
Then of course, there's fear. The constant worry and uncertainty. Do they really love me? Are they lying? What if they get sick of me? Why me out of everyone? The never ending questions that come with the never ending thoughts. Indubitably there's anger. Wondering how someone could make such a choice when they say that they love you. Missing the point or principle of things needed to be talked about. It’s frustrating to go through times of misunderstanding and miscommunication, but it doesn’t have to be the end. Sometimes I think it hurts more to love than it would to not. However, love is bound to come with complex feelings and emotions.
All three variations hold something special to them. Truly, love is a unique and divine thing. It follows everyone from their first breath until their final one. Family holds you in your early days. Friends carry you through your youthful adventures. And your significant other holds you as the grey hairs grow. Love can last, and it can also be lost, which is okay. Loving someone is never a waste.
